Where Churches and Nonbelief Groups Agree

Secularism simply means separation of church and state, and the groups in our coalition do not oppose religion. In fact many of our members are churches with deep faith. Others are skeptic, science, and philosophical groups whose members may or may not be religious. We also list many groups whose members do not believe in God. What we all have in common are our shared goals:

  • Separation of Church and State. Religious conviction and religious authority are not trump cards that should claim to speak for all people or demand the final say in public discourse. You don’t need to oppose religion to feel that faith dominates politics too completely.
  • End to Discrimination Based on Belief and Nonbelief. No one should be harassed or ostracized for their religious beliefs, or for not having a religion. We seek to normalize the role of those who do not believe in God in society. Everyone can get behind that.
  • More Science in Decision-Making. We promote rational thinking, using scientific evidence to establish facts, when governments or communities make shared decisions. We’ve all seen the power of science to bring us gadgets and human progress. We should use it in government as well.

Do you run a group that supports secular values? Joining our coalition is free, and there is no obligation, though we hope you’ll take an active role. Learn about the benefits to joining!

We started outreach at the start of 2015, and already have 305 coalition participants from all over the world!
